1. Book early – Book as soon as you have decided to go on holiday to avoid facing limited vacancies or overly priced packages. Shop round for flights, so you can get the best deal.

2. Plan, plan and plan – Make sure that all your travel documentation such as visas is up to date and in a safe place. If you are driving, ensure you have filled your car up with petrol, oil and water, and that you have checked and filled the tyres (including the spare). Also, log onto the AA’s website to check out your route for roadworks, potential hazards and updated tolls to ensure you know what to expect.

3. Spending money – Always ensure that you have a backup stash of money – just in case you need it and keep in mind that sometimes when you check into hotels, the clerk may put a block on your credit card as insurance against your bill, often flattening your balance.

Hilton Chicago Workers On Third Day Of Strike

Workers at the Hilton in Chicago held their third day of strike on Monday to protest the hotel's refusal to raise wages despite receiving federal bailout funds.

Unite Here Local 1 held the last day of its planned three-day work stoppage. Workers are expected to return to work on Tuesday.

Workers including housekeepers, dishwashers, cooks, bell staff and food servers walked off the job Saturday, joining other union members who held strikes last week in Hilton hotels in Honolulu and San Francisco.
